Curriculum Expectation Students will Geography • describe how the following major factors influence commercial agriculture: location, climate, raw materials, market, labour, transportation • identify the effects of natural phenomena on people and the environment • create and use maps for a variety of purposes Language Arts • demonstrate an understanding of appropriate listening behaviour by adapting active listening strategies to suit a wide variety of situations, including work in groups • communicate orally in a clear, coherent manner, using a structure and style appropriate to both the topic and the intended audience • gather information to support ideas for writing, using a variety of strategies and a wide range of print and electronic resources • identify and order main ideas and supporting details and group them into units that could be used to develop a multi-paragraph piece of writing, using a variety of strategies
Time • 45–50 min preparation • 60 min interview • 120 min
'''Steps 1.''' Review with students the things that are essential for agriculture, such as: • fertile soil • flat land • long growing season (climate) • raw materials (e.g., seeds, fertilizer) • labour (people to help with farm work)
Then ask students to consider what else would be needed if the products from farms were produced for the main purpose of selling them. Commercial agriculture also needs: • markets for the products • ways to transport the goods • farms close to markets and/or transportation
2. Tell students that they will work in small groups to interview a local commercial farmer. You want them to use the interview to help them better understand the major factors that influence his business, including location, climate and extreme weather conditions, raw materials, market, labour, and transportation. 3. Before students begin their work, provide them with any necessary handouts for interviewing to help them conduct their interview link.
4. After students have completed their interview, have them create a handbook that is organized into the following sections: • location, • climate (including extreme weather conditions), • raw materials, • market, • labour, • transportation.
Their handbook should include a map that shows: • the location of the farm • the climate of the area where the farm is located • the markets where the products from the farm are sold • the forms of transportations that are used to get the products to the markets
5. You may wish to have students assess each other’s and/or their own contribution to the project. If so have them use BLM Project Contribution Peer Evaluation and/or BLM Project Contribution Self Evaluation.
Enrichment • Invite students to share their completed work with the class. • Have students publish their work online by posting the materials on the Mennonite Heritage Portrait site.
